The title theme of Epic sounds very similar to the music in the first level of RoboCop 3 - same company, same composer. The similarity is not a bad thing because the samples and the melody line are memorable and atmospheric. Doesn't hurt to reuse parts of your own material if it worked.

What I recall about this game is that it took an Epic amount of time getting released. It had wildly different magazine scores. It had great intro music thudding along as those 3D ships floated along gracefully. Ultimately was a decently enjoyable F-29 in space.

Maybe not the best story, but very good in many aspects. Really loved it. Vote 8/10

Nice intro but everything else sucks. And it took no advantage of my thrusty GVP [email protected] So i hated it after reading all those hype reviews back then.
As a tec-demo you should better get Odyssey by Alcatraz. At least it runs with a decent configured turboboard or fastmem AND it is FOR FREE.
I think I'll go and play "Interceptor" or "Starglider II" instead. Even 20 years later nothing has changed this feeling ...
Maybe you should better do even ...

Although not as epic (no pun intended) as other spacecombat sims (wing commander , elite,...) this one (in my opinion) had the most fluid gameplay.
I still remember the sample "launch all fighters" when starting this game.... Hehehe
Any because the gameplay was so smooth (in my opinion) I actually finished it to the end, it's not that difficult and the gameplay is good I just think they should have made the story more compelling...
Anyway...thumbs up for this one!!!

I liked Epic. Planet missions mixed with space missions, varied mission objectives, good graphics. Nothing special, but well done overall and fun to play. It captured the Space Opera feel better than Wing Commander.

Nice graphics although the sound fx was a bit sparse, but it was total madness to include the cheat in the manual and made what could of been a half decent game too easy. Unbelievable lunacy!

What a shame. This game was put back, and back, and back again. When it was eventually released it was still not finished. The graphics were pretty impressive, the story good enough, nice music....
But overall it was too easy, and the cheat code being included was... Well crazy! Overall a 'decent' game, but one that could have been fantastic.

Ok, so instead of the free-form space flight simulator people were expecting after two and a half years, we got a run-of-the-mill space combat game with spectacular graphics, sound and cutscenes. Well, I love the genre so I don't care about how shallow the gameplay is.
Takes a bit to understand what you have to do in some missions, but anyone who liked Wing Commander will eventually like Epic.

I remember when I was a little kid I loved this game. It was so exciting. But I still can't get furter than first level.

I loved the look of this game and that kept me playing it regularly until I got tired of the lack of challenge and wasn't interested in seeing what the next levels would look like. I also went back to stuff like Elite and others I can't recall right now. This could've been something special with the engine and maybe some creative touches much like the Elite games. I remember wanting to get my hands on Inferno (which I finally did on the PC, great game until it stopped working after PC upgrades
Still, this isn't a half bad title. I'd probably give it an overall 6/10.

Ok so this game described the cheat mode on the manual, and even if it didn't it was a simple job to find it anyway. The 3D was nothing of brilliant but competent...
At the time there was no wing commander or similar for amiga, so EPIC came to fill that void.
And I have to say that i liked, it had variety at first, and the combat levels did portrayed some sense of being part of something huge - in that sense epic - and of course the enemy model ships were recognizable and to some extent pretty. I really love the second level (or is it the third) where you descend into a planet and disable the Ion cannon (Star Wars refs.) and the communication system.
Of course the background story and ship models were all rip-off's of other sci-fi movies or series - even the piloted ship does have some resemblance to the star wars A-Wing fighter, but that is not really bad.
The enemy AI is a bit strange, particulary in huge battles, where you find that some of the enemies seem to be wandering around without doing nothing or in a matter of minutes all firepower seems to concentrate on you.
The music starts by setting the mood right but ends up becoming annoying. Just like the game, by the time you reach the fifth level or so you've seen all of what the game has to offer.
The game is a little to linear, and pretty soon it offers all the same, so the novelty wears off, and it becomes a tedious task (and pointless task) to save the fleet...

I remember it, vaguely, and it wasn't bad. Just wasn't excellent either, so I stuck to playing Frontier Elite II instead.

I think I completed this game on my first or second go back in the day. All it had going for it then was some impressive and atmospheric graphics and now that they're nothing special there's no real reason to invest any time in "Epic".

Not the worst game in the world but such a let down after the wait. How many times did publication of this get put back??
The size was impressive, music good but repetitive. Story was good too. Gameplay a let down though, mouse controls never seemed quite right.

There were rumours about this game years before it were released. I saved all my pocket money to buy it, but what a disappointment! The ads called it an "Epic space opera" - it was nothing but a mediocre "flight simulator".

If I had a hat I would eat it back than.
This was my kind of game
I will probably be a bit dissapointed today.

There was not so much to do to make it perfect. Unfortunately everything ended so messed up that instead of 3D space combat simulator, it was one-time shooter. It's a pity. 3D engine, if a little bit more polished, was perfect in those times. Just to work a bit with IQ of opponents, add some new missions, make the game a bit harder and challenging and fix the bugs. It looks a lot to do but in fact those are just a details which could make it perfect. Pity...

My favourite space sim. Graphics at the time were the thing and the intro music was great (although repetative). This was truly a great game for Amiga at the time and I bought it upon release, and beat it over and over again

Has everyone forgotten that this game was completely BROKEN?!

Epic space opera (in 1992). Not very impressive graphics-wise (today). One of very few Amiga games which are a bit outdated by now. What a pity!

Looks so horribly dated now , but when it come out it was the best thing since sliced bread. I waited for this for ages and wasn't dissapointed. Played and played till finished but didntplay much after that though

I had waited this game forever but it was a PC version I saw first. I was devastated. Amiga version couldn't come nowhere close it. But Amiga version blew me away. How was it possible for humble Amiga to move so much polygons at so fluid pace? Well, it wasn't. In reality it was jerky and made your eyes bleed but when the game came out, I didn't realize that. I was just happy to play it. The game was way too easy. The reference card even printed the cheat to replenish your fuel and ammunition! The ending was, well, epic in a moving kind of way. Nowadays, I can't play it. It's just plain unplayable.

Well I waited a long time for this one to be released and unfortunately it wasn't really worth the wait. What we have here is F29 Retaliator space edition. This is in fact quite a basic game, and a short one at that. All you really get here are a few Battlestar Galacticaesque "protect the convoy" space missions and "blow up some landmark" ground attack missions. A couple of the space missions do admittedly convey a huge scale which is nice, but even the effect is ruined because all of the sihps involved come across as being strangely small. There's something screwy going on with the model scaling. All in all - didn't really work.

I remember the first time I started this game up and was blown away. After the deep seated mental shock that was seeing Wing Commander on the PC (and fearing an existence without such a wonderful space sim) Epic delivered the awesome space opera we had all been waiting for. Granted, the big cutscenes were gone and the framerate at times was less than perfect, but we got dozens of objects on screen, huge planet surfaces to explore and complicated mission structures. This was truly an Epic game.

I remember that it took Digital Image Design some time before this game was done, but it's worth it. Sci-fi simulation, with elements inspired from many popular sci-fi series such as Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, fight in space and on the surface of a planet, featuring some mesmorizing visuals - huge structures, monorails, huge space battles. Short for some, but an immersive experience all round.
Too bad that games these days don't support those zoom and pan features while playing. It's breathtaking sometimes. A classic.
Be sure to check out other games from D.I.D. - T.F.X. And Inferno (PC) are highly recommended.
