I did have this during 89, but I don't really recall it that much. There must be a reason for that - it didn't have anything worth remembering?

Loved this game. The only problem is that the physics is tied to the frame rate, so if you run the game on a faster Amiga, it accelerates the physics as well. Best on Amiga 500.

A true classic!!! First time i saw a 16bit 3D game. I was shocked and spent hours playing the game, taking off, landing...and of course, shooting those beautiful sidewinder!!!
A MUST PLAY!

Nice to hear that my first flight simulator was also the spiritual prequel to the Jetfighter series!
The genre might be dead and buried - and it's baffling that VR hasn't quite managed to revive it yet - but Interceptor is and always will be my little special gem.

I won't talk about the game being the absolute classic that it is, that's been covered and then some in all the comments.
Yet no one seem to remember (or be willing to mention) sth else also definitely classic about Interceptor: its crack intro by Unit A!!!! Alright, admitedly some people got it legit of course (and boy, did they miss sth!).
That intro became nothing short of legendary: the impressive (at the time for me!) and moody visuals with animated gold logo, the haunting bass music, even the very scrolltext ( "Scandal! Scandal!..." ) have all passed into posterity today...

Influential. My very second game (after Defender of the Crown). Intro music hounds me to the day. First 3D-Mind enhancing game!

My first flight sim back in 1988 IIRC. It was so good I just kept playing the 6 missions over and over again. The graphics were very smooth on a basic A500, with a half meg upgrade you benefit from some extra sound effects, including the intro music I seem to recall - a theme heavily based on the Top Gun music.
All in all, perhaps far too easy, and too few missions, but there was something about it that made me go back for more. I suppose it was eventually replaced by Falcon, even though I really wanted to like F16 Combat Pilot (night missions etc) it just didn't feel as good.

This game tended to be a revolution when it came out.
At the time i got my thrusty GVP030/50 besides my miggy my pc using "friends" started to not coming over to me anymore and it was because of this game (and a few others) running so extremely smooth ...
Didn't PC users really suck back in the days?!? I mean ... If I had an PC I would have sold it and get myself an Amiga as fast as I could achieve one ...
Strange people ...

This flight simulator has very bare graphics with few details and certainly cannot compare to any recent equivalent for modern PC. However the 3D view works very smoothly and the controls are simple and good enough to provide excellent playability. One great thing about this game is that the missions are variable with only some of them requiring to fight, and are also fairly realistic in the scenario, such as having to track and shoot a small bunch of enemy targets rather than hundreds. Note that the game used a lot of RAM, so that with only the basic 512k the music and some additional effects were disabled. (

There exists an enhanced DOS port called Jetfighter. It spawned a whole series on the pc. I really like the Amiga for its great 2D games but in the 3D simulation sector the pc is on higher level due to the different hardware.

One of my all time favorite simulators. Yes by todays standards the graphics aren't very good, but the atmosphere of the game was incredible. Locking onto a mig, firing a missle at it and watching it fall with the smoke trail behind it was excellent. I usedto love locking onto the migsa, firing then hitting the enter button and whatever key it was to watch the missle go flying from the plane. I logged many hours on this game and I still will fire it up on my trusty miggy to have a fun go at it.

Quite simple flight simulation when it comes to missions, cockpit... But the most enjoyable one ! As an aspiring pilot back then, I spent hundreds of hours practicing, and polishing my flight skills... Thank you Bob Dinnerman !

I had just learned how to read when I played Interceptor. I somehow managed to take off from the aircraft carrier: cue utter confusion about what I was supposed to be doing next. The manual, the cockpit and the mission objectives were a bit too difficult for me to comprehend as a eight-year old.

Ah yes, my first Amiga game! You had to fill in some codes before you could start by using some kind of blue round shaped thing...after that, it was all about trying to land without crashing, to kill that other jet and to fly under the red bridge! Good times!

Once I got my Amiga in 1992 the Interceptor wasn't brand new, anymore. Meanwhile there were much more complex sims around, supported by the well known magazines, which I read passionately. I remember the AmigaGames and the Joker as well as the last days of the month, waiting for the new articles. Comparing to the F/A-18 the improved grafix and campaign menus of later games were often pointed out, suggesting their importance. Despite of this, Interceptor provided some more essential features. It came with really great physics, so in terms of feeling the speed and imagine the forces it was beyond compare. The white-noise sounds, fine tuned to the several views were also stunning. So it was one of my favourite games these days. Reflecting the past, it has to be mentioned, that this concept still works until today. When other developers were filling their schedules with dozens of missions this game convinced by only consisting of six ones, which were played hundreds of times by a large community of fans during the years. Concerning that Interceptor was programed and designed in a team of only three people, it's a real masterpiece. Even the method of calling enemy forces just terrorists turned out to be a timeless way of defining political conflicts.

After i got my 512k expansion.. Suddenly there was this cool top gun music playing at the start! Brought a big smile to my face! This was a really fun sim, but the last level I could never blow up the enemy ship... And i just found an interview with the programer and it looks like you pretty much cant!! So yeah.. Thats kind of frustrating that it couldn't really be completed!! Still a classic though!

Loved it! This was one of the very first games I got and I remember being amazed at the technology--I knew that real military simulators existed--I didn't know that such things were available for plebes like me--hours of fun

I absolutely loved this game. I was amazed by it especially the playability. I remember the different views you could get too, it seemed so sophisticated and to this day is my fav flight sim on Amiga.

Oh ... Those memories. This is the first serious flight simulator that I played, and I think that one of the best. (in the past I was playing ACE in the C64, not too serious, but fun).
The music of tension and a climate that generates the game I think is unique.
Today I'm playing, and continues to fascinate me as the first day.

Very impressive back then.
i preferred to fly around than play the missions, looked kinda complicated back then

This game was fun! It was possible to land the plane safely upside down if you were careful enough

The best 'feeling' flight sim on ANY platform. It was so playable and has enough depth and such an amazing 'freedom' in the gameplay. My all-time favourite game!

Spent a lot of hours trying to land on carrier... Argh
excellent simulator for the period..

Probably the best flight simulator I've played (OK, I have far from played them all, but anyway)! Very smooth graphics, and good missions. Takes a bit of practice to master - I don't know if I could just load the game up today, and make a landing on the carrier.

Once you mastered the commands, it was really fun. Flying under the bridge was too. A masterpiece. The first time you safely land on the carrier you can actually feel the success. I still think I could fly the real thing

I never ever finished a single mission in that game. I was so young I hadn't had a glimpse of what to do. Yet I fired it up quite some times to see those amazing graphics for that time It was so smooth and flying over or underneath that bridge was just... Whoa! As if you were there! Awesome.

I used to play it in 1989 or so. Just a few hours ago I loaded this one on my emulator and played it for an hour or so. Still very playable and fun. 10/10 for me.

This is one of the most important games in simulation genre perhaps it's the most important because this game was the first simulation which achieved such a public popularity it started an interest in simulation games.

The best Flight Sim period. Sure no textured graphics, but this gave a true 3D environment anyways, I lost a lot of sleep to this game, just plain kick butt

Aaah... I spent a lot of hours in this one. Even quite austere on the graphic level, it was pure fun on the simulation one. Maybe it's the flight model, I don't know, but passing under the Golden gate bridge with this baby was really something back then

Man, this was a deal-breaker. The game that made me decide to upgrade from my C-64 to an A500. I remember I patched the display cables through a VCR and recorded a lot of action from this game, it was passed around my PC and Apple owning mates who were gobsmacked.
A little known trick is that you can use the mouse as a throttle control, rolling it forward while holding down both buttons increases throttle, rolling back decreases throttle.
It's also possible to glide the F-16 to a landing once out of fuel, but not easy.....

Great game for its time. Smooth graphics, interesting missions (but maybe not enough). Can still remember the excitment of shooting down my first MiG!

Best flight-simulator on Amiga

AH! I loved this game. It was in fact the game that made me decide to scrap the good old C64 and nag my parents to buy me an Amiga 500.

Best flight sim on the Amiga!
The controls were easy to get into, and there was a training mission too (if I am not mistaken).
The graphics were good and it was pretty fast (for a pseudo-3D environment).
9 out of 10!

Oh yes. Preliminary was too hard to me when I was young but now I can handle it.

Probably the first flight sim I ever saw on the Amiga and it was a jawdropper at that time. Even now the game is still playable and fun..

Cracking sim! Especially for its time. I remember just flying around aimlessly taking in the landscape and enjoying that feel of being 30,000 feet in the air!
View all comments (524)
The best hands down. I used to play this game non stop. Only other sim at the time that came close was falcon. I used to love going to the external veiw in free flight and changing views and doing barrel rolls while the landscape scrolled all around. Very addictive.

I could never finish the last mission or manage to fly under the Golden Gate Bridge upside down.

Amazing at the time.
Two missions?! Hee hee!

This looked truely amazing in 1988. Today, horrible dated. Nevertheless, the game is still cool but it's a shoot em up which pretends to be a flight sim, really.

I have not played any better fighter sim on the Amiga. Perfect.

This is THE flight sim for the Amiga! Great gameplay! And I liked flying with Mach3 underneath the Golden Gate Bridge

Like Lamer_Exterminator below, X-mas '89 was all about the Amiga Batman pack. This was something for my dad to play. He was in the RAF & the Royal Canadian Air Force, but could he fly below the Golden Gate bridge? Well yes, actually. He could. But not before I did. So then. Thats that. Love the shameless Top Gun rip-off title music. Remember when EA were all about quality instead of quantity?

I remember playing this on my mates expanded machine back in 1990, and was the first game I bought for my a500! Still cant sink the carrier thingy though! (9-10)

One of the oldest Amiga flight sims and also one of the best if not the best.
I was a flight sim fan on the Amiga don't know why but Im not keen on them now, but F/A 18 was good fun , I alwys enjoyed flying under the bridges at max speed the best.

One of the first Amiga games I ever played, although I don't like flight sims that much. A fun way to get into simulators, and admit it - it felt so cool flying beneath the Golden Gate bridge!

When I saw the reviews I thought Wow.. That was going to be brilliant - then I saw it a my favourite computer store.. The framerate was awful.. Compared to my expectations at least.
But the game was fun to play and felt worthwhile.. That's why I say 7/10.

Still my fave ever flight sim. Brilliant

After have seen Top Gun I used to play this game every day, very nice gameplay with smooth movements, detail could be a bit better but for it's time it was an excellent simulator...

Yeah! Christmas day 1989 - the first game I ever played on my brand new Amiga (the Batman pack )! I could never be bothered with these sort of games at that age - I just wanted to BLAST! JUMP! BLAST! Etc.. , but looking back now I can appreciate how good it was, especially for it`s time.

The first flight simulator I played on the Amiga, and certainly one of the best. Not too over complicated to pick up and start playing straight away thanks to the easy-to-learn controls, but underneath lies a realistic and demanding game with a nicely matched difficulty curve. Fast, convincing 3D visuals and excellent sound effects make this a winner, and if you were fortunate to have a memory expansion module in your Amiga you had the benefit of title music and other effects too.

The only "realistic" flight sim on the Amiga I ever got into. Oh the memories.

Yes, one of the best, if not the best flight sim on Amiga. Multiple points to start, interesting missions (I remember chasing a nuclear rocket). Zoom and pan functions could bring about some stunning visuals. It's also possible to land on a carrier sideways by the way.
Classic.

My very first Amiga game. Needless to say, I played it a lot. I still think this is the best flight simulator for the Amiga. Probably beacuse it had a shallow learning curve. Easy to play. Oh, and it is actually possible to land an F-16 on an aircraft carrier, and take off again after a full stop..

A true classic, such a easy to get into flight simulator, with fun missions and neat tricks such as flying under bridges. Proof if proof be needed that to make a easily accesible flight simulator didn't mean you needed to make it arcadey like Afterburner or current PS2 games.
The Codewheel was a bit annoying though, but at least they implemented it within the storyline of the game.
