I spent many sleepless nights playing this with a relative, working out all the puzzles and slowly working our way through this. We eventually completed it. Wonderful game.

Flashback is Excellent!
In particular I appreciate the way combat works---it emphasizes careful monitoring and thoughtful planning under time pressure without requiring pixel perfect aim or lightning fast reflexes. I think this is brought about by the duration it takes to carry out your various moves (stand up, crouch, turn around, roll) and the duration of your enemies' moves: long enough that you have to plan reasonably well, yet not so long that you can get away without improvising in the heat of the moment. Just exactly the right pace for me.
The puzzles are fairly easy, but somehow just difficult enough that you feel at least a little bit clever when you solve them. This include some combat sequences---they should really be thought of as real-time puzzles.
The sound effects are great, as is the sporadic use of music for emphasis. The graphics are attractive.
Graphics is the one area where 25 years of technological progress really makes a big difference for the better; by attractive, I mean "attractive, if you don't mind the screen resolution and the constraints it imposes". I do not mind :-)
The story---if you're uncharitable you call it derivative, if you're charitable you call it a tribute. In my view it's perfectly competent and workable but nothing spectacular. And while I enjoy the watching the story unfold in the cut scenes, story is probably the game's weakest part. Still: competent, workable and richer than many other games.

The gun battles always felt frustrating to me. Managing the gun and the shield was never as smooth as it ought to be.
However, even today, I still find the movement and animation absolutely mesmerizing to look at and the faux-cyberpunk/They Live style story does the trick.
Puzzles are decent, not particularly challenging but pretty decent.

This game demonstrates that in 1993 a game without multi parallax game could be an excellent platform game for the Amiga 500.
Beautiful graphics and musics, excellent animation (thanks Another Word), a good scenario and a correct duration define that game.
A superb game as the Delphine team knew how to do.
9/10

Flashback looks fantastic, sounds nice and it's pretty good adventure platformer.
But in comparison with Another World, it lacks something.. It's more professional on one side, but less unique, creativite or maybe atmospheric, it just hasn't that spirit, which had its predecessor..
Anyway, it's still great game

This is a near perfect 2D game in my view. The animation, the playability, and especially the atmosphere.

Fantastic story, superb animation! Just when you thought nothing could be as good as OOTW, Flashback comes in. I love the cut scenes, they are an essential part of the game, not to mention the sound fx and music. This is a must for every Amiga gamer. If you haven't played, go play it now! This games rules. 9/10!

Godly music. Amiga version undoubtedly has the best music. The only problem was that the screen size was small and they cut parts of cutscenes on Amiga.

One of the few Amiga games that actually takes advantage of the Amiga's hardware! Very atmospheric! A great game!

Hmm let's see it's been at least 20 years since I played this one the last time, and it was on the SNES not the Amiga.
But I've started it both on my 500 and 1200 with 030 and it runs so much smoother on the 1200.
Back to the review of the game.

But I've always felt joyous when playing it, even though I never gets any far but that's not the point of, really.

Amazing game back in the old days. The motion of the figures where awesome. But i never get very far... Ok i was young and not so skilled. I have to play it realy again after 20 years. And i will!
Because since 21.08.2013 the Flashback HD-Remake is released on the XBL-Marketplace. From the same Team who produced the orginal Flashback. The screenshots are looking realy good. I already downloaded it yesterday. Very exited now to play on the weekend. When im through it, i will also finish it on Amiga for the first time!

An epic game! Absolutly amazing, technically stunning with an unbelievably smooth animation and great presentation. There is basically everything in it that you will adore! Some of you might find some flaws or little mistakes but nothing is perfect. But this game is very close to be one!

This set new standards in video games as it was the first time the hero wore the 'blue jeans and brown jacket' look I do believe.

I've just finished this game! Feels good to beat this title after almost 15 years of trying
Storyline is cheesy and corny and cut scenes - when you pick up something- are so annoying! Music & Graphs rock though.

If I could only choose two platformers for the Amiga it would be Flashback & Prince of Persia. Outstanding games which will always be remembered as classics. It is the highest honour anyone can give a video game and Flashback like Prince of Persia is a classic.

There is nothing more to say.

Flashback is not the sequel to Another World. [www]

No one has mentioned two things: this is a game created on Amiga, that's an honor, and the intro is longer in PC however the music is far superior on Amiga
Flashback is the only game that has been copied to Prince of Persia and has been successful.well it would not be fair to say that it's a copy because provides enough new features, the most representative are the wonderful sci-fi graphics certainly.

A Nice Sci Fi Game. The Guy Moves Like In Prince Of Persia.

This really is a top game.
Apart from the ugly intro movie the graphics looked great.
The story is amazing and having to do jobs to earn money is great fun.
Some of the jumps are really difficult though and so is the combat if you haven't played it for a while.
8/10

Perfect! When I put my eyes on it I couldn't believe the graphics. I just HAD TO PLAY IT!
The character movements, the scenario, the music, the plot, everything, just perfect... Much better than Another World imho...
I just feel like playing it all over again!

Very challenging and special platformer...
View all comments (65)
As good as it is - I never got past the first couple of stages. Just as 'Another World' did, it does suck you in from the moment the intro movie starts playing. Beautiful graphics, great gameplay (although the slipping and sliding character can be a bit frustrating at times), great sounds - and overall just as innovative as 'AW' was.

Such a fantastic game! 10 of 10 for sure!
This is truly one of the better scifi games for any platform. In fact, I've been planning to have a special great scifi appreciation night some night. That night, we will probably watch a great scifi movie like The 5th Element with my friends and then play this ace game with them.
Wish there were more games as good as this one!

Where to start! Its an awesome SciFi platform adventure... I really cant think of words to describe how great this game is! All i can say is for anyone out there who hasn't played it (i doubt there is) then PLAY IT! And for all those that have played it... Play it again! I am!!

The absolute best game ever created for the Amiga, bar none.

Immensely good game, great intro sequence and intense music, really sets the atmosphere for the whole game. Similar in style to Another World but a much better story and much better gameplay, even the tedious courier jobs in level 2 aren't all that bad. Good times.

Much like another world it felt so ahead of its time, both graphically and inovation-wise. It always made me look at other amiga games and think 'With games like this how can you excuse such sub part efforts'

This game is definitely one of the best ever! Loved it on Amiga and loved it on the PSP. There is recoded version of the game engine that runs on nearly everything. I played through the hole game on the PSP again and it was a blast!

The title music is awesome and gave the game a real movie feel from the start. Nice graphics and brilliant animation, I'll leave it at that as the other comments cover this nicely.

The graphics in this game are of a very high standard. The levels are nicely designed, although it is quite a difficult game to master. I never got very far in this game, but I still enjoyed it. A good, challenging game, that's for sure!

I've just written a comment on prince of persia, well, please allow me to cite myself at this very place:
"In game history prince is what mozarts jupiter symphonie is in music history. Kids(literally) will prefer flashback etc. Which is more fun but they would unlikely be able to master prince. What is so challenging about prince? Hard to tell (not the controlling for sure; indeed its the most precise controll i ever encountered in platformgames, due to its excellent degree of abstraction, after some exercise you will forget about it and begin playing, which for example is impossible in games like flashback or another world where now and then there arises another situation in which you suddenly have to concern about the handling in a technical way)"

Very nice comments on this superior game. But this is the one I bought that taught me Amiga wouldn't last much longer. I ordered this game, along with a stack of others I'd wanted like Ishar, from a magazine ad and got a stack of pirated floppies.
10/10. On the "best of" list for sure.

The best graphics ever seen on Amiga can't hide the lack of playability and the average level design. As Another World, IMHO an awesome tech demo.!
View all comments (20)
Of course it's a great game, among the best action-adventure on Amiga ever, BUT I always thought it lacked some work on design. Like, the main character is dressed in the 1980's fashion style. Okay, the highlander reference is cool but still
Also the job part on Titan sucks. Like you can go to an agency and get a bodyguard job? Stupid!
Apart of that, Conrad's moves are awesome and much of the levels own, for sure. I like the Alien ship design, it's weird. And the Earth streets, they're cool. I wonder if Moebius, who did the euro box art, didn't help out on this

This was pushed as "Another World 2", if I remember correctly. How wrong. It just does not have the atmosphere and inspiration of Another World, which is quite understandable given the departure of Eric Chahi and the history surrounding the whole project. It is still a technically excellent game.

What can I say, its Flashback. Ground breaking. The FMV, the sound, the game play. It's just the best. One of the hottest games of it generation. Even now it still looks dam dam fine. I good friend of mine still talks about this game as being the best game of all time. Bow down to the all mighty Flashback

[edit] Today in 2018 it is still superb. Absolutely perfect in every bit. Perhaps the most professional made game for Amiga. [/edit]

I remember seeing a clip of this game on the TV show Gamesmaster in the early 90's and it blew my mind away. It showed a guy moving very realistically in an alien environment and shooting a gun that sounded like a gun is supposed to sound (realistic-ish loud bang - something most games at the time lacked) and there was some cool music playing in the background. Apparently, they showed the Mega Drive version.
A friend of mine got it for the Amiga when it was released and at first I thought it was okay-ish. I expected the game to scroll (I got the wrong impression from the earlier clip I saw) and I was a bit put off by the long loading times, disk swapping and using the keyboard for F1 and Space Bar. This was back in '93.
Fast forward to 2005 and with WinUAE and a joypad configured with all the keyboard buttons onto it, disk drive speed set to 800% I can play this game to the max without the hindrances of the real Amiga. I played it for 2 solid days just a few weeks ago and was genuinely impressed by it's playability. The puzzles are excellent, the graphics STILL HOLD WELL and the gameplay is just unique. I prefer this game to Another World (which I thought was absolutely excellent when I played it first). I rated this a 9.

Bow down to the game, trust me this was a god of games. It had everything. Lush GFX, great sound, atomspheric music and fantastic intro and storyline to match. Probably one of the best games ever to grace the Amiga family and hey its Delphine again hitting the limelight, huh what a surprise

It surely looked great BUT... Somehow it just didn't felt as good as Another World. I think that it lacks atmosphere which Another World had. Playablity is also not quite as good as in Another World. I remember that I got frustrated at some point and never bothered to finish the game.

Gfx: 10/10 [I'd like to give it an extra point for character animation]
Msx: 10/10 [climatic, dynamic]
Fun: 10/10 [where's that ADF!? Where the hell it is!?]
Overall: 10/10

More of a game than Another World, but the graphics & sound are not quite as impressive. Especially the music was disappointing. And some of the level design eventually put me off... But the presentation and gameplay were still good enough to make this a top game by any standards.

This is a game of love and hate for me. You gotta admire its stylish art design and well-implemented playability even though much of it is ripped straight out of classic Prince of Persia. On the other hand, I absolutely hated the later levels because of their utterly illogical design. I'd love to play it again and I'm looking for an original copy of it either for Amiga or Sega Megadrive. Playing with emulators isn't quite the same thing.

This game from Delphine Software is a true sci-fi classic! The art, the music, pastel colours. Everything is stylishly perfect, and it plays very well - very immersive, and very charming. It's almost as if you are playing a movie. One of the best games on the Amiga, and one of the best games that I've played.
Be sure to check out more games from these great French developers - Heart of Darkness, Fade 2 Black (Flashback sequel), Another World and others.

Conrad... OK... He thought he should have been in Miami Vice with this brown leather jacket, but after you got past that you could really start to enjoy the game.
This was a wonderfully absorbing game, with cut scenes enhancing the play rather than slowing it down. The animation was amazing due to the 2D polygon engine, used to great effect in both the game play and the cut scenes, because only points were stored rather than bitmaps this meant that you could squeeze many more animation frames in the limited memory.
The one problem with this game were a couple of puzzles where you were against the clock and you had to be pixel perfect with activating items which meant replaying a mission over and over until you got it right (anyone remember trying to get the disk in the computer?)
From a personal point of view I was playing this game when the Chemical Brothers 'Exit Planet Dust' album came out and the two fitted together perfectly.
After I left the Amiga to the PC I bought the follow up 'Fades to Black' that took the Another Life / Flashback series into glorious 3D. This game kept the feel of the previous Amiga titles and featured FMV cut scenes.
Anyway, this game is and was stunning and truly epic.
