A timeless work of art and my favorite game on the Amiga. Nuff said

A mind blowing game, It was way ahead of its time. So much Imagination has gone into this, it really does feel like you have been teleported to an Alien Planet. I played this with 3 friends & we worked hard to figure out how to get through each section. If you like this, try the PC version as it has a couple of extra levels that were not included in the Amiga version. Also, there is a part 2 called "Heart of the Alien", only recently converted to Amiga. And check out "ONESCAPEE" as it is very similar to this game & was obviously inspired by Another World.

One of my favourite games of all time, perfect in every single way. This is one of the greatest gifts in the world!

Possibly the most atmospheric game ever. This together with Flashback puts Delphine right at the top of the tree for me. I couldn't choose a favourite between them.

The amount of times we watched the intro to this game. Anyone new came to the house, we'd put the intro on to WOW them! I never got that far into the game - those little leech monsters were the stuff of nightmare, never mind the huge beast you had to run away from - with the unavoidable TRIP that they put in there too. If I made it onto the next level I counted that as an achievement.

Totally agree with the previous comment. The legendary game! Haven't played it yet? You must be joking or not a human Amiga being... )

One of those games that wrote history and made Amiga legendary

I received it one morning about 24 years ago. I had played for 8 hours (until the end) the same day.
Simply excellent.
9,99/10 (because it is a bit short perhaps)

Maybe one of the best adventure. But maybe too short...

I really like the graphic style and animations of this game and the effort that went in, but I just can't appreciate the gameplay. There are no clues what to do, it's all trial and error and it's hard to see the difference between foreground platforms and background graphics.

Another World was so far ahead of its time it's almost mind-boggling. We have become so used to games that seamlessly blend cinematic elements with the gameplay it's easy to overlook Eric Chahi accomplished this in 1991 without a team of artists and coders assisting him. One of the major achievements in video gaming history.
View all comments (962)
I don't think this plays well by modern standards, if it ever really did, but it's a remarkable game for the cinematic presentation - all without the use of streamed video. Has to be experienced at least once in a gamer's lifetime.

At that time the introduction to this game was simply stunning in concept and implementation, but the best was that the actual game kept up all the promises of such intro, unlike other games of the time. The graphics of the game itself and the cut scenes blend perfectly and seamlessly with each other. Great concept art, nice puzzles with a balance between the timed ones and the more relaxed. If this game has a flaw it is that it could have been longer. (9)

Being the first to be developed is what keeps the Amiga version from being the best Another World ever. Man, if they had published the MS-DOS version additions as a data disk I would have bought the first game expansion of my life.
Still, it's that Another World that made the history of gaming: brief but intense, eerie, stylish and unique. Sort of what Dear Esther is 20 years later, but with more of a game all around.
I'm in no hurry to play Heart of the Alien since Eric Chahi was not behind it (his name got me to buy From Dust on day one!), but it's definitely in my backlog.

Great game, cool graphics and it was really something new -20 years ago. On the other hand Another World is so hard to beat that it has driven me nuts for all those years. 15th Anniversary version is the best; it has more checkpoints so you don't have to repeat some sections over and over again and better graphics (just a bit).
All versions are pretty much similiar, however 3DO version looks somehow better than Amiga/Dos/Snes etc.

Not a bad game by any means. A little bit too much attention for what it was in my opinion. Great animation and concept obviously but perhaps lacking in playability a tad... I'm just throwing that out there. 7/10

Very good platform-adventure game that was very well crafted on a technical point of view. I had the French version (for some reason, that version was the one sold in Portugal) which was a bit harder for me to understand than english, at the time. Even so, the gameplay was pretty much self-explanatory and the dialogue was scarce, so I rather enjoyed it anyway. A good game if a tad too difficult in the final stages.

This is deservedly one the most revered games of all time. Another World set new standards for cinematic storytelling in video games. I sometimes still like to imagine that I'm in the opening sequence when driving at night.

The into was brilliant. Really set the game up. The atmosphere was also brilliant. I like the way that you really didn't know what was coming next and made you feel that you was really there.

I would like to add that I've played and completed Heart of Darkness and it's not much atmosphere as Another World but it's better than Another World.Play it on a PSX emulator(epsxe) or PC version.Heart of Darkness is not the sequel of Another World,it's a different game. The Another World sequel is Heart of the Alien but it can only be played on SegaCD,it's an excellent sequel(I have also completed it) however it is not developed by Eric Chahi.
OnEscapee [www] is very similar to Another World,Flashback is different of them.

This was quite a breakthrough back in the day with it's lovely animation and almost cinematic type quality. As others have mentioned though, it's really a memory game and once you have that sussed you will sail through the levels! I must admit I still went back to this game after finishing, just for the experience!

Aside from being rotoscoped, what does this game have to do with Flashback? If it's a prequel to that game, is it a sequel to Prince of Persia?
But, yeah, Another World. Brilliant idea, and the execution is beautiful, but it's almost unplayable unless you have the entire thing memorized. In that case, it's over in about 20 minutes. The concept of a platform game that doubles as a (surprisingly good) cartoon may be unique (and its one-man development team is certainly impressive), but that's hardly enough incentive to sink time and effort into the thankless drudgery of actually playing it. Watch the longplay on YouTube if you're curious about it.

Its unfair that this always gets compared to flashback because its a really good game and should get its own reviews without been influenced by flashback.
7/10
View all comments (126)
This is the best game I have ever played. I think even Eric Chahi himself could not repeat this great work in Heart of Darkness. Heart of Darkness is a good game, but another world is really outstanding. I also think that flashback is not comparable to another world, indeed it is an unsuccessful attempt to imitate another world and I believe flashback does not belong to another world’s genre as it often looks like boring graphic/text adventure games.

How, how, how did Eric Chahi do this flying solo? This game was so far ahead of its time... The manual came with little instruction so you had to figure it out as the game progressed (had to have influenced Myst); the distinctly cinematic aura; the gorgeous artwork; the visual story-telling... This is the pure height of D.I.Y. Game programming that may never be matched again.
I'm jealous of the younger version of myself that opened up the box and popped in the disc for the first time. One of the truly singular gaming experiences I've ever had. Stunning and unforgettable.

There was nothing like it before, and there really has been nothing like it since (not in the same graphical style and so forth).
Truly amazing gfx and style with top moody sound fx make for the full experience! If i had one complaint, it was a little to short... But then again, this is all about quality, not quantity!

An amazing achievement. Graphically and atmospherically it showed what a humble A500 is capable of and really broke new ground. However, though the game itself is quite enjoyable, it's too linear, too shallow and too short. Which is a shame, because... Well, you can see for yourself. Thankfully Flashback realised its true potential.

How can people give this 1 out of 10?! Sure I can see how a creepy platformer with pretty hard pussles arent for anyone but c'mon, this game is a work of art and deserves atleast a 8 out of 10 for just being so damn beautiful and intelligent.

French games, eh?
Sometimes they really hit that special spot. Another World was definitely one of those games!
I remember standing in a computer shop and watching a demo of the running-away-from-the-monster scene at the beginning of the game.. Totally blew me away! It was unseen, breath-taking and oh so cool. This cinematic quality is in fact the strongpoint of the entire game. Eric Chahi created super-stylish minimalist art and combined it with very in-your-face sound fx. The intro music still gives me the chills.. Impressive!
it didn't matter much to me that the game itself could be quite frustratingly difficult at times, but in the end you couldn't get around the fact that you’d been playing a very addictive, good-looking and original game that sticks forever to your bones.

I remember getting this from a very good friend of mine who said that this is a must try...sure...I came home from school, and popped the disk in my A500... The impact this game made on me...whooooowhhiiiiiieeeeee!!!!
un [F-word] believable...I finished the game the same day...
This game deserves to be among classics like lemmings and such why?
One must have played back in 92 to understand...
The only faults this game had:
- to short
- to easy
(flashback corrected that!)
Maaaan...this game was pure cinema all the way... I played the game over and over and over those days, while mario was bumbling around...conrad was jumping all around the dimensions cinematic style....delphine hounored the amiga with this classic!!!!

If I had to choose 3 games for the Amiga, this one would certainly be one of them - the mood and immersion the intro creates was simply astounding. I remember I couldn't reset the Amiga after I finished the game - I was caught by the outro and music.

I still have a poster for this game somewhere, I loved this game incredible atmosphere. The beast chase at the start gets the pulse racing far more than any RESI game ever has!!

I remember when a friend of mine gave me the 2 floppies of Another World, and began to explain me how the gun worked... "you press it once and it fires... You keep it pressed and here you've got a shield". At a first look it seemed nothing special, to eventually result to me in one of the greatest games of all times. This game is one of the reasons why at that time when Amiga ruled in Europe we DID NOT NEED japanese games like mega man, and even Mario or Sonic. Eric Chahi is indeed a damn GENIUS, and it is simply a shame that is name is not remembered enough today. A classic in every aspect, I still can remember the alien guy saying "bay-tu-lla?" when the character picked up the gun.... Amiga rules!!!

Atmosphere, music, graphic style, and the intro.

When you know this game was a one man job, you understand what genius is. Eric Chahi is one genius. He created the most incredible game of the 90's on a simple Amiga. This game has it all : story, gameplay, gfx, sounds. Once you start it, you want to finish it. It might be a bit short, it might be a bit easy but it certainly is an incredible adventure. The cost of today's games has killed artists like Eric Chahi. If you jump in Another World one more time, try Heart of Darkness, a PC platformer created by Eric Chahi. It was wonderful too.

You know the word "classic"? Well it fits perfectly on AW. This game, fifteen years later, still has "class" AND is one of the games who founded a genre. Along with Dune from Cryo and a handful of games, this is one of those who redefined video gaming, among the firsts to get away with arcade gameplay. No digits or words onscreen while playing, no points, no items to collect except for a gun, no goal except for survive, no prize except for liberty. No dialogues and yet a sidekick you could like. I'm not even mentionning the graphics who where so stylishly gorgeous they still rock nowadays. Check the PC remake in HD to get the idea. Awesome game

Another World was a brilliant game for its time, and it still amazes me today as to how Eric Chahi managed to cram such a resource-heavy game (all those animations and SFX) onto 2 floppies and somehow make it work on an A500! The game oozes quality from start to finish thanks to some very clever puzzles, surprises, and the fact that it is also a real technical achievement. The only downfall with this game is that it is too damn short (I can finish this game in about an hour!).
Btw I urge everyone to play this game in the dark whilst wearing headphones (with the volume turned up loud) for the best gameplay experience. This game is a bit scary when played during daylight, but is unbelievably frightening when played at night time with no lights on whatsoever! I did this last night and I was still stiff with fright after seeing that beast drop down on me!
Overall an absolute classic that is only let down by being too short.
9/10

It is truly a game out of this world, has great GFX, sound, gameplay, thrilling storyline, one of the best intros seen in a game, and much much more.
This game was so good that they should have released the sequel but failed yet that would have made more impact on the Amiga because this was making the way for games companies to wake up & smell what was in front of those "crappy sub-standard" games

Another World was one of those rare games you got an Amiga for, and which also made the Amiga. With a brooding sci-fi atmosphere, beautiful 3D graphics and cut scenes integrated seamlessly into an instantly addictive and very playable game, you've got yourself a masterpiece. It felt like you were taking part in an epic movie, but unlike Space Ace, the cut scenes did not encroach upon the gameplay - they actually added to it. I agree that Another World is so much more then a "game" - it's an experience to relish and be in awe in, one that will completely envelop you in its creative and detailed world, and imaginative plot. It's the sign of a monumental achievement, one that not many other games both before and after Another World have reached. And the intro has got to be one of the best intros ever, if not the best. Deep, captivating, and rewarding, immersive and entertaining all the way through, Another World is truly something else.

An Amiga classic. Definitely a game more about presentation than reflex. Game-play is very similar to Prince of Persia or Flashback, with a dash of arcade Laser Disc game thrown in. Where the others (PoP & FB) are action games with stories, this is a story told through an action game. Amiga users everywhere used this as a show-off title all their friends.

A beautiful game, with an interesting story and deep atmosphere. Only downside to this gem is the lack of a set "building block" style structure like it's sequel Flashback had. That would have prevented many repetitive deaths caused by being one step off of your beat. But still a must play classic.
