I played it the first time in 1989 on Amstrad CPC. It was already good and it is yet better on Amiga.
A very good platform game, quite difficult as some game were at that time, with 'vicious' traps and precise playability.
I put the mark of 8/10 for a decent technical side but that should be better on our super Amiga 500.
Perhaps one day, some team will design a Rick Dangerous like for A500 with more colorfull graphism, nice musics and a bigger screen area. Let's dream :-)

It's fun to see that despite all the years since this game was released, the opinions always diverge and divide the players. Yes, Rick Dangerous is clearly a 8 bits game adapted to 16 bits computers. Yes, it's a punitive "trial & error" game without concession. So if you want a technically astonishing show and a classic platform game with evolutive difficulty, you can go your way. But if you're searching for a real challenge, a simple but nice looking game with a neat level-design in which success is really rewarding, so Rick Dangerous is for you
Nowadays, I'm not sure anyone reading these lines are discovering this game. But if you hated it when you was a child because you thought it was too difficult, just give it a new try, maybe in its "choose any level" release.
Rick Dangerous is a great 80's game, a pure classic. All the ones that hate it simply didn't understand its rules. They don't hate Rick Dangerous, they just hate "trial & error" games

Rick Dangerous is often considered an iconic game for the Amiga. Honestly, I don't see how it could be so. This is an 8-bit game that happens to have a couple of 16-bit versions. Everything in this game, from the technical aspects to the gameplay, is totally reminescent of puzzle platformers games on machines like Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and such since the early 80s. But the replay value is everything in this game. There is always time for "one more game" (7/10).

1989 was the best year for the amiga gaming production and Rick dangerous define it well. Surprising and frustrating game play based on try and learn, but so well executed with this unique atmosphere. It's a 10.

Exciting fun for endless days & nights. Dynamite timing experience!

As a homage to Indiana Jones and its ilk I think the game works incredibly well. Nice graphics and spot effects along with some fiendish level design. Yes it is often a case of trial and error more than other games but it suits the style they are trying to emulate.
Good game 8/10

I still remember the first time I played this on my CPC 6128 back at 1989...
The rock hunting me from the very first second.......
Although its graphics are not a state of art its gameplay is absorbing. Creates the symptoms of "one more time- i ll beat this point.
I have played the game in various formats (Amiga,ST,PC,Amstrad, Spectrum)
and is amazing in all.The scream of Rick is one of the Top moments....
By far the best game of the series.

BOOOOOOOM !!!

I actually appreciated that Rick Dangerous relied more on trial and error than on skill. It simply sets up a different gameplay style that trains your memory as much as your reflexes and timing. It wouldn't have worked at all for a Mario-like platformer, but here it seems to have its rightful place. It's just not your typical platformer style: it is what it was meant to be and should be judged as such.
Now having said that, I haven't seen it past level 2

Oh my God! Rick Dangerous! Spent hours on this on all formats: ZX Spectrum, PC CGA and Amiga! One of my fondest memories...

The box of the game should have had the following message...
Abandon hope all ye who boot this game
You have to be a bit sadomasochistic to make yourself try over and over and over and over [....3 hours later....] and over and....
but still it was FUN!!!
HAHAHA ... This game is in a league of it's own still I have good memories of it. This game was never to be intended to be easy, at least for the ones who finished it...hats off!!

Classic, Fun, but yet way to hard

Ha, yes Rick Dangerous! Nice and fun game, I nowadays still know the path you have to take without dying

It's an excellent game but too hard. You'd either have to be Billy Mitchell or a real machocist to complete this game. The iPhone version got it right. When you have complete a world, you get to save. I completed Rick Dangerous a few years ago on the Winuae. I think I must have used a thousand save states

One of my fav games. Played it on the c64 first. In Amiga is a pleasure how is it done specially with the funny sound samples

Horribly overrated and frustrating game. This was no substitute for well-crafted action/platform games on the console systems.

Could someone please explain to me what people like about this piece of garbage? It's pretty much the most unfair game ever created, with terrible graphics and music to boot. I suppose that it's "good" in the sense that it likely has a stimulating and beneficial effect on the player's memory, but it's about as fun as a tooth extraction.

Inexplicably popular platformer that is essentially a glorified memory test. It is 100% trial and error. No warnings that something will kill you or anything like that. Even things that had previously been safe will bring your game to an abrupt end. Not what games should be about; there's no skill involved at all. Awful.

Trial and Error platform gaming, perhaps as good as this style
of game can get?
Need fast reflexes too(even if you know all the traps)

A classic! It would have been nice to have it on PSone and later consoles.. Not so many TombRaiders but more Ricks =)

There's a good game in there somewhere. Pity it's buried beneath idiotic sudden-death level design. It may only be one flaw, but it's a game-destroying one.

Just started playing for the first time. It's funny and addictive to play--great sound effects--but the randomness with which you get killed is infuriating. I don't like having to memorize a level for that reason, but nonetheless, still fun.

Fun, addictive, skill and dexterity in some puzzle situations, simple and great responsiveness playability, a storyline, the duration of the levels, the moderate difficulty, a mixed enigma/puzzled and platform game into one piece of art in videogames! Recommended to everyone!

Great game with a lot of gameplay. However, it did have the tendancy to randomly kill you with spikes or somesuch a *lot* I think I still have all the levels memorised so as to avoid the traps

I liked to play this game back then with a trainer, restarting a level over and over again until you did it was actually fun. Played "correctly" you'll notice though how bad the game is with it's unfair level design and lack of continues.

Great game with a great Indy-like adventure plot everyone loves! After all these years I can still remember how to dodge all the traps in the 1st level.

One of the best platformers, you had to play through it hundreds of times and be perfectly accurate in order to advance!
could have been a little more easier, it took me years of practicing to reach the final stage, and never finished it!

I loved this game, up until the Egyptian level, where there was a pixel perfect jump that had to be timed to miss a dart. I nearly chucked my Amiga out of the window. I used to look forward to Firebird games they made some classics for the Spectrum

I utterly loathe games like these, games where dying is simply unavoidable and is indeed amost required in order to spot hidden traps.
Little skill. Just walk along carefully, get killed, and remember where and how to avoid it next time.
They should have given 100 lives for the player to have a chance to finish the game.
Very poor.

I've never been a fan of this type of puzzle/platform games so I might be a bit biased. I remember getting this game, trying it for 10 minutes, come to the conclusion that it's okay in most aspects and yet I never played it again. It seems to miss a sense of purpose to it...

I really like this game, despite the fact that the only thing making it hard is the hidden traps that you need to memorize the location of. I think that's a pretty cheap way to make a game last longer, but hey...it was still really fun to play, and had some really funny quirks! Haven't played it in a long time now.

This was the first game I saw on an Amiga, possibly the first time I had seen a computer game full stop! But hehe, yes, this game was certainly very, very annoying. The ONLY way you could progress through it was to die basically. You had to find out and remember where all the traps were, and then you could actually get quite far (level 3 without cheating). But by that point you had done that opening rolling boulder scene about 3,486 times!

Enter room, slowly move forward, dodge falling boulder, get killed by hidden spear trap. Lose a life. Restart. Enter room, dodge falling boulder, jump to avoid hidden spear trap, move slowly forward, get killed by another hidden spear trap. Lose a life. Restart...

Very funny and addictive game. Trying to remember all the traps can be quite difficult but once you played a level for the 345th time you get used to it.

Frustrating as they come and very difficult but I loved nonetheless. Having the bonus items look the same as the traps in the last level was a bit cruel though.........

Rick Dangerous is the hero. He clearly influenced Lara Croft, and Indiana Jones, and Alan Quatermain, and Henry Stanley. When I grow up, I want to be Rick Dangerous. In the meantime, I want to use the same toothpaste as him.
Also, 10/10. Provided you play with an infinite lives trainer.

I actually really enjoyed this game. It was really unforgiving at times when spikes popped out the wall or a bat suddenly attacked you but this made it a case of memorising these next time round which made it fun! I think I made it to the third level with normal lives and I enjoyed every minute!

Frustrating try and error gameplay but a fantastic scream while dying

The sort of game best enjoyed by people who, when cooking their breakfast in the morning, are genuinely disappointed that the bacon doesn't leap out of the frypan and throttle them to their death. For absolutely no reason whatsoever. 1/10.

This game starts off quite enjoyably but slowly turns in on you like a bad acid trip. Eventually you will reach the limit and then you'll never want to play it again. Ever.

About as fun as a sexually transmitted disease, and certainly a lot more painful.

Frustrating and perhaps unfair but great level design, graphics and addictive gameplay

A fine game basically, but too difficult. People say that Shadow of the Beast is too difficult. That's not true. If you want a difficult game, try this one. Trial-and-error -thing is not a problem. After all you get further every time you try the game. The problem is that difficulty level grows so rapidly that not many players ever reach level three, not to mention levels four and five. The graphics and sounds fit well in game and playability is good too if we forget the difficulty level. Or did I not try hard enough? It is possible that I am wrong. I think Rick Dangerous 2 was very fine and much better.

Woohoo! One of the most entertaining games after h.e.r.o., well.. Err, maybe

This is possibly the best version of Rick Dangerous - Some of the others seem too hard but I got to grips with this one. Its a perfect game in an Indiana Jones vein, and if you like the 'Monty Mole' games you should try this. Great!

Quite unfair sometimes, or simply bastard to be honest, this was so genuinely fresh and entertaining you could easily forget about its rage-inducing moments. The controls worked fine, the graphics were cool and, above all, guessing where the traps were was part of the fun to be had with the game, so you just had to look around carefully. A little classic.

While certainly being a hard game I would not class Rick as being unfair. As you get further into the game you begin to second guess traps and this became part of its pull.
Fantastically responsive controls and collision detection meant that if you died, and you knew where a trap was, it was generally your fault.
Hand and eye coordination together with some inventive puzzles make this game a real treat. A fantastic game.
One last thing, don't play it with a cheat as you'll be missing out on the point of the game.

Hard platformer that throws unfair hidden traps at you, so it's a mix of 50% testing your memory and 50%. Perfect timing. Fun at first, but too linear to be enjoyable in the long term. The sound effects are really nice, though. A hit game at the time.

Succeeding in a platform game should be about surveying the scene, planning a path through, and making your jumps precisely so as to avoid contact. It should not be about walking to a seemingly-innocuous looking space, getting hit, remembering how to avoid it next time, walking to another seemingly-innocuous space, getting shot by something you couldn't've seen before, and so on. This is one of the most over-rated Amiga games going, and the sequel isn't that much better.

Trial & Error. That's all it is. Graphically it looks spiffy, but really it's nothing special... Addictive, though...

You really need an infinite lives cheat if you're thinking of playing this.
I used to play it with my friend, it's rather tricky.

This game had too many "try and die" situations. Luckily those are avoided in the sequel.

I HATED this game because of its extremely difficulty! 4/10

There's two ways to view this game- with a cheat it's fairly entertaing fun. Without it's ludicrously difficult and frustrating!
