Pure magic! Check out how Amiga's R-Type pic & music made it to the C64 in 2018! Game Art Beyond: [www]

R-Type is difficult. Very difficult. It could be called a hardcore gaming classic but it would not make its difficulty level less unfair. That's not to say that it is not a first class arcade game, it truly is. On the Amiga it plays pretty much the same and, even though a few visual details are missing or different nothing is detracted from the gaming experience. R-Type is still one of the best horizontal shooters the Amiga has (7/10).

One of the better more innovative shooters on the amiga with clear colourful gfx.A tough but fair challenge . Shame it lacked the parallax backdrops of the arcade. Fab title music 8/10

One of the game i've played the most. Yes it 's challenging, but when you finish Hybris every single game you lunch you are happy to find some resistance. This is not only a game this is a myth, thanks to Chris Hulsbeck and programing team. Good job back in the days.

It is not that R-Type on the Amiga is a particularly bad game in any way.

It is just that as an arcade port is is nowhere near arcade perfect.

At first it just seems to be the somewhat squashed graphics, but then we also notice missing backgrounds, monsters that do not make a "hint" on the second stage as of when they are about to emerge, at times really strange choices of colours and finally on the third stage a sequence so crippled that it hurts.

Though, as long as one does not compare this to the original arcade version it is with ease one of the better shoot 'em ups on the Amiga.

A very good conversion of the arcade original. Terribly hard and suffering from the typical "one life only" syndrome (i.e. Once you die you loose all your extra weapons and power ups, making it impossible to continue, especially if you are in the advanced levels). It was nonetheless one of the best shoot-em-up on Amiga at the time.

Too hard. Good thing that there are cracked versions with cheats, otherwise I would never have a chance.

Excellent conversion! Apart from some missing backgrounds, this is almost identical to the coin-op. A well done and engaging shoot'em-up!

A great arcade conversion. The graphics feel a bit chunky but look good. The gameplay is great and I enjoyed playing this one. The thing that annoys me like many game like this is losing a life and then losing all your weapons. Good fun.

There is many better shooters for the amiga, just look at hybris! But its r type and ive played it on the sega master system, commodore 64, spectrum, and the arcade, strangely i prefer the amiga version.

This game looks attractive and the title music is superb, but the in-game music isn't that good - the C64 version's music was better. On the other hand, the original Arcade did not have so good music, either... But somehow this conversion wasn't the hit it could have been. Still 7/10 for me though.

Excellent game. I played a lot of this one when I was a kid.

Light Force (4 game pack) included this game, Voyager, IK+ and Bio Challence.
In Finland Light Forces original price was 199.00 Mk. From Musta Pörssi.

Very good conversion except for the lack of parallaxed backdrops and slightly wimpy in-game music... 8/10

The shmup by which measure nearly all of horizontal shooters out there. Great soundtrack, smooth animation, not too steep learning curve, colorful settings, fascinating enemy waves, so on so forth... I won't go into too much details here.
R-Type is a challenging, inventive, well-balanced shooter, with one of the best option system around. Obviously gave developers a hard-time (PC Engine version looks good too, though it flickers a bit [www] ).
R-Type II features even more amazing special effects (underwater and such). The classic shooter that should be practiced intensively by any gamepad / joypad user IMHO.
As a kid, I was so glad I could play R-Type from my room that the high degree of difficulty of the miggy version went unnoticed. Alas, difficulty level of that version cannot be adjusted.

One of the better arcade conversions. Only problem is the graphics and most music, but again, this is 1989 and not much was perfect around.

Ugly background graphics that do not really take advantage of the Amiga's capabilities are the only real flaw in this otherwise excellent port. R-Type is an awesome arcade game and remains an awesome game here.

Great conversion. Came back to it quite a bit over the years too. Unbelievably difficult and it still took an age to clear even with the infinite lives cheat mode! 8/10, best of its genre on the A500.

A good conversion from the coin-up, but nowadays it is not worth playing, it cant be comparable with the original, but I remember that on my Amiga I enjoined to play it for a while...

I played this one sometimes but did not like it so much. There is something irritating with this game. PC Engine version seems to have slightly better graphics (background). Good thing with this conversion is the title music by Hülsbeck.

One of those arcade games that spawned many lookalikes. On the Amiga front it was a more than reasonable conversion which I actually quite enjoyed. Although, difficulty was a factor as it was a "learn the bad guys routines or die miserably" type of game. I mean getting killed on one of the later levels meant certain death as you were stripped of all weapons!

Why was it that the really good arcade games always seemed to get really awful conversions, whereas the mediocre arcade games were converted perfectly? R-Type in the arcades was a hugely influential shmup with iconic graphics, innovative power-ups and original level and enemy designs... Which was ruined by the fact that if you died once, you lost all your weapons and had to start over. This Amiga version captures all of that perfectly - and suffers from exactly the same flaws. Oh well. 6/10.

Good stuff, and a decent conversion, if an ST port.

A competent conversion of one of the most famous coin-op ever.
The problem is that Amiga could do much better than this (look at the grey-atarish backgrounds on the second level...c'mon guys!), but AT LEAST it is funny to play for a while, even if it is far from the arcade magics.
Incredible opening track from Chris "the genius" Hulsbeck indeed.

Competent conversion plus the bonus of some excellent title screen music.
Doesn't play quite like the coin-op though.

Very good! I was really looking forward to playing this conversion and I can say it is spot-on! Some of the other computer versions were a bit dodgy, but the Amiga version is addictive from the first play. Graphics and Sound are also good but it's the gameplay that is the best thing. One word - addicitve!

This sure looked like a great conversion, until you reached the sadly squeezed mothership on level 3... Other than that, it played, sounded and looked nice, providing some good moments for R-Type addicts. Like me.

I always find it funny that the people who made the rip-off Katakis (which Irem stopped and forced to release with slight changes as Denaris, if I'm not wrong?) then converted the original! Too difficult for my tastes, but looks like a smart conversion - and C.Huelsbecks title music is really majestic!
