I wasn't a fan of this when it first came out but like many other game, slowly grew on me and I put that down to always rushing around and not taking my time. Start to play this at a slower rate and I live a LOT longer. The graphics are the first thing to amaze. Looking at it you'd be forgiven thinking it's AGA.

This game is extremely good. One of the top platformers on the Amiga. When I found out this was not AGA, I was astounded. The graphics and animation are incredible, and the gameplay is great. The only thing missing is some nice parallax in the background.

Absolutely astonishing graphics for an OCS game, puts most AGA games to shame. The scrolling is a bit rough round the edges but still an incredible achievement. Very playable and great sound too.
Almost certainly suffered from appearing at the tail end of a very wearing few years of endless cutesy platformers, most of which had been horribly overrated. I paid no attention to the magazine hype about this one at the time because there had simply been to many hyped cutesy platformers by this point, but with the solid shooting mechanic this one genuinely was a bit different / better.

Technically superb! Unfortunately It came too late. I tried it x times but never started to play it seriously. And that's perhaps a shame!

My favourite platform shooter, love the music, sound fx and gameplay! 9/10

Ruff'n'Tumble is one of the best platform/shooters ever. It is a fast paced and frantic run and gun experience with one of the best technical presentation the ECS/OCS chipset can offer. The accuracy in coloring, drawing and animating is outstanding. Musical score is fantastic (you don't get to hear industrial metal in a platform everyday) and sound effects do their job and are functional. It plays really well, even offering some originality in the gameplay department, like the weapon system and lack of timer that allows some planning and exploration. Ruff'n'Tumble is very, very challenging, almost to the point of frustration. Almost, because a password system mitigates the difficulty. Nonetheless, this is a game for hardcore gamers only. All in all, a classic (8/10).

Nice graphics/music, but the scroll not sync ruined it ...

I really enjoyed this game. The presentation is up there with the Amiga's best and the music rocks. It's incredible what can be done on a 1mb Amiga 500, and this proves it.

I've tried to like this one many times but the frame rate is just an absolute deal breaker. Hurts my head after only 20 mins.

Lovely game. I'm enjoying it for half day. So sad we hadn't this game back in time in our club. Two worlds are done. Two more I'll keep for tomorrow.
Music is just amazing along with graphics and gameplay. Recommended to everyone.

This could have been the best platform/shooter-game on the Amiga but, very sadly, the jerky scrolling ruined everything. The graphics were beautiful and detailed (as in a real coin-op), the gameplay very well designed but... I was never been able to play this game for more than two levels before my eyes began to hurt! I would have happily given up to the 32 colors palette in exchange for a solid 50/60fps framerate. Turrican II (which uses a 16 colors palette + copper bars effects in the background, for a much smoother experience) remains the best platform/shooter on the Amiga.

Great platform shooter that used the Amiga's capabilities to the full

Great little run-and-gun platformer that never got the commercial success or critical recognition it deserved.

Incredible game. . . Must have for all Amiga fans.

Just a f*****g game !

I've never seen before the password system used on this game. The password only allows you to play one world, for example to get the password of the third world you would need to complete the first and second world in the same play,so the game must be completed in a single play!
A console-style game on the Amiga, despite not being the specialty of the Amiga the result is excellent however the Amiga games highlighted in greater depth.

Superb in every terms! Graphics, sound, music, animation, challenging gameplay with pure massive action! Everything that take only 2 disks with very fast loading. Epic!

You completely missed CAOS's point, Scumkill.

A real 'badass' game! Some really great graphics and sound. A nice change from all the cutesy platformers that we have for our machine. And still a great game to show off the Amiga.

A top notch game one of my all time best

Very likeable--not loveable, mind you...
Just reliably, dependably--
Likable. Marvelous detail, fast, high quality music, impressive sound effects, but repetitious. Overall, a quality game.
[edit] Not one of my absolute favs, nonetheless, I've rated this one as a classic in my games collection, because it deserves it.

This is nothing more than an average Amiga platformer. You can't aim and then fire up or down a slope which is unforgiveable because it ruins playability. In these types of games smooth scrolling and responsiveness are mandatory (where are they?) and lush GFX aren't. This could have been the most disappointing Amiga game, if only they made it earlier when it would have counted and there were greater expectations. But they didn't so this game receives a 5 and a roll of the eyes.

This is a excellent mindless platform blast em up....awesome graphics and thumping sounds too

This game's good, but there are better games for me. Of course great graphics, but it also came out in 1994, so a late amiga game. Highly overrated on here. 7 points.
but don't get me wrong, it makes still fun.

I play it every christmas from the beginning at the ending

This game deserved more 90% + scores... It may not run as smooth as the likes of superfrog and so, but its gfx are simply gorgeous! Music is suitably up tempo and its fun frantic action. A real A class platformer shooter this one!

That's what I had thought. Oh, well.

Well, I tried to look closer, and I am not so shure any more it's EHB. It is more then 32 colours on the screen, thats true, but... Playing area has no more then 32, and the other colours are placed only on the status area (lives, weapon, score, etc). So, I suppose it's just another, small screen with it's own palette on the top (also no more then 32 colours). Looks like I was to quick in my conclusion
View all comments (2)
It uses EHB mode? I'm skeptical; it doesn't look like it. If it's true, though, I'm giving it a 10 just for that.
View all comments (141)
It's not AGA game, but it's not 32 colours game either. It's half-bright game, (meaning 64 colours at the screen together).

One of the best platformers on the Amiga. I'd rate this one up there with Gods and Turrican. Excellent soundtrack as well

One of my favorite Amiga games (though Flashback beats it in my opinion). The graphics are PERFECT (though they sadly lack parallax scrolling), the music and sound effects are clear and intense, and the level designs are excellent. The scrolling might not be as smooth as it could be, but it doesn't detract from the game and it's easily forgiveable.
For pure action, the only thing better on the consoles is Earthworm Jim.

Never a dull moment, this one's full of action! Fast-paced and exciting throughout, though very difficult and a real challenge.
There isn't really anything ground-breaking about Ruff 'n' Tumble - you run and jump, collect ammo and new weapons, kill bad guys, collect stuff, find the exit, eventually battle it out with a boss and so on. But everything about the game is done really well, and that's what makes it great.
And the music is awesome. Heavy rock music on every level, really sets the mood and is great to listen to.

The Graphics are AGA standard but there were a few quibbles. First, the character does not always shoot when sliding into an enemy. 2nd, the character doesn't shoot up slopes (only if they are 45 degrees), and 3rd, only destroyed monster traps don't come back if you die. However, the game is very addictive and gets better with every try. Shame about the bugs.

This graphics made many peoples wrong, so they were surprised it is not for AGA. It's impressive and hard to belive that background is only 32 colors (amazing gfx skills). Great platformer, my favorite for amiga.

Polished graphics, challenging gameplay. Hard to beat a little kid with a machine gun! This is one of my favorite platformers ever even though I originally only had the demo version since I had just bought a PC in 1994. But I've played the full on emulation and it's a great deal of fun. May be my favorite Amiga game I only played the demo of (originally) along with Bubble & Squeak.

Appearing late in the Amiga's life, Ruff'n'Tumble showed what the machine could do in the hands of skilled coders and talented pixel artists.
It looks and plays like an Arcade game, it's just that good.
Try it, if you don't like it, you don't like top quality platform gaming! Go play a flight sim'.

I'm not much of a platform-shoot-em-up games fan, but this is one of my few favorite games. I loved the graphics and gameplay, and when i first played it when i was 15, i have to admit i liked it, and theres not many platform games that i enjoy.

This game was really fun as a kid, maybe you shouldn't be so harsh on a game made so long ago. If you're THAT upset about the framerate, go and play an XBox or something you jerk. As far as I'm concerned, this game was great fun as was Global Gladiators.
View all comments (1)
Intensely overrated, intensely underwhelming shoot-em-up... Only slightly more engaging than the awful Global Gladiators. As noted by others, the chugging framerate is inexcusable.

Its fast, its action, its metal!
Thats the way a platformer should look like! Just the last world is a little bit too difficult. 10/10

Amazing graphics! I couldn't believe what they were pulling with an ordinary ECS chipset. Awesome. The music is really cool, too. Too bad it has no smooth scrolling.

Truly awesome. The best platformer on Amiga, and probably on any platform.

Excellent platform with great graphics and animations, just remember me some atmosphere from Atomic Robokid and MutantKnight...the only fault is the scrolling, cant understand how it is possible a 68020 with custom chipset cant manage a smoth scrolling in this game...

Incredibly underrated and self-conscious game. Every aspect of this game is excellent, from grpahics, sound, gameplay and programming. I wonder what happened to guys that produced this game.

This must be another of the most underrated games ever... Words cannot describe the excellence of each and every aspect throughout the whole game (jerky scrolling aside, that is)! You miss it, after you finish it.

When I was talking about 'the global gladiators' being my favourite platform game, I obviously forgot about this one! The sound, the graphics, the action! Wow this is one hell of a furious game! If you didn't check it out already, then it's about time. Believe me.

Simply the best platform game on AMIGA.
Altough it is not a pure platform indeed, whiy its wonderful shooting elements.
Amazing graphics (despite the not-so-fluid scrolling), adrenalinic soundtrack and wonderful gameplay, filled whit action, perfect controls and brillant level design.

Superb graphics and sound, with near perfect gameplay. This and Turrican II were my favourite platform shooters on Amiga though I tended to play TII more due its more epic spacey atmosphere. This game still looks gorgeous today. Amazing colour usage for an A500 game.

Excellent graphics, excellent sound and excellent gameplay overall. I discovered Ruff 'n' Rumble as late as five years after its original release and I still could agree wholeheartedly with the rave reviews. One of the best games for Amiga systems. I just wish there had been a CD32 conversion.

If it's pure class you want... Ruff 'n Tumble is your game! Graphically absolutely stunning, one of the nicest games on the Amiga, and sonically a feast! The game is pretty hard, but the playability is brilliant. You want to go on and on to explore more of the game. Just brilliant! An absolute must-have!

Whole name of the game is "Ruff ´n´ Tumble in a fantasy forest". But it is written only in she subtitles in final sequence. I like the boss in the first world - that crawling morphing robotic tank.

Excellent game, with tremendous graphics, that has one MAJOR flaw. The hills are set to a different angle than the gun can be pointed. This makes shooting enemies uphill almost impossible. A very frustrating flaw that really takes a lot of fun out of the game.

One of the latest Amiga games, that became a classic. Wonderful graphics, unbelievable animation, fantastic metal soundtrack, dozens of weapons, great special effects (note the fluent changing of background colours when entering underground passages!) and original enemies and bosses. All the game has a balanced difficulty, except the last world (the one full of spikes). It is not possible to complete it without cheats and if you have unlimited lives, you although loose at least 30 lives there!
