Given the Amiga specs and limitations, the graphics on this game are absolutely lovely. Excellent colour placement and very good multi-layer parallax. Sprites are clear and well drawn as well as the enemies and the environment. Very Good!
Some of the best musical tunes on an Amiga game. And if we have under notice the fact that the Amiga was world-renown for its incredible musical abilities, this is saying A LOT. The sound FX are also nice and suit the game quite well.
Gaming-wise, this is an excellent game all around. It introduces itself with an interesting plot and then develops with a nicely established pace. Neither too fast nor too slow. There is a vast array of "weaponry" and power-ups to acquire and the variation between levels is not only pleasant but also gives the game a sense of continuity, avoiding the sense of repeatability.
Excellent Game! Highly recommended! Every Amiga owner should have this game. The game comes in two disks, but there are barely any disk swapping and the game allows the use of the Amiga second button (major plus). I can only find one thing keeping this from the perfect 10: it doesn't save high-scores (at least i could not get mine to save them, even though we can save the config.). Everything else is top-notch.

A truly top tier shooter that comes with equally top tier music and great graphics. The game is both tough and addictive in equal measure and is one that keeps you coming back for more.

I know I prefer Apidya to Project X. The music does help to push you further with Apidya. I like the feel of the game, insect theme, the control, the anime, the graphics, music and sound The first challenge is the Stage 2 Boss, very reminiscence of the Stage 3 Boss in R-Type 1. The difficulty ramps up on Stage 3 & 4 and by Stage 5, you will need to know the bosses attack patterns to go further, as you will have to deal with at least three of them. It is a pity by the time you reach the final boss, the boss itself can be killed so easily with the first fully powered up weapon, just find the sweet spot and hey presto, game won. Apidya is far more creative than Project X in it's design, way more creative. The only problem with Apidya is in it's difficulty, but in saying that, we all like a challenge, right?

There's loads to like here. The setting is quite original, with some imaginative and impressive enemies (not twee throughout, as some assume), the great graphics scroll smoothly, and there's music and sound effects at once. It feels Japanese, loaded with consolesque options (savable, though this doesn't work in the crack I've got now, can't remember if it did in the original) and a user-friendly vibe.
I got this on budget, and it feels like I ought to have enjoyed it loads, and I always told myself I did, but the harsh truth is that I didn't really - I got a lot more out of Project-X 93. Sacrilege?
I'm not great at shoot 'em ups, but %age wise I got a lot further in PX93, with difficulty here not helped by the overly-busy background and foreground graphics, or the extreme loss of power-ups when you die leaving you too weak to shoot enough waves to earn more tokens - even more so than in PX93.
I can't be alone in preferring spaceships or fighter planes to insects. Other than the drone the power-ups add little, make little use of the nature setting, and feel less exciting than those in Project-X, which can be upgraded much more strategically.
What's more, the blurry yellow and red on the level 1 bonus game makes my head hurt, but I still get up to 3/4 of my points from it, which doesn't seem balanced. Though technically good, the music doesn't really fit the setting, and can't be turned off. Almost a classic, but for me it falls short.

Apidya has great graphics and music but gameplay system lets it down. Contact with anything = loss of life. After that you don't respawn in the same position but are moved to the last "checkpoint" and your weapon is weakened. Original game was almost unplayable for me and Earok's special edition 2018 made Apidya a better game.

Great shmup, but damn those bosses and gore are creepy.

I am generally terrible at shooters, but this is one that keeps me coming back above most of the others on the platform. It's a treat for both the eyes and ears, but definitely a challenge. I wish it was a bit easier, but I can get further than in R-Type and Disposable Hero! I also really love how the power up system works, well thought out. A quality game.

This one is a really good game, however it is rather difficult. You need to be focused everytime you start it. Nothing is random here - you need to learn the stages if you want to win.

This is not my favorite, but The musics ans the graphic are incredible. Thought i prefer lunching a X-out or a Blood Money in 2016, it's still a reference.

Kaiko really wanted amigans not to feel bad about not having a Megadrive and released a perfectly crafted gem that would not look out of place in any japanese console or in the arcades. Inspired by oriental sources (Insector-X and maybe Super Shooting Towns for the FM-Towns) but truly amigan at heart (the way they coped with the one-button joystick option is brilliant) this game delivers a challenging but not frustrating gameplay and is technically flawless (8/10).

Very overrated shmup. Presented like a Japanese console shmup but once you get into the game into is decidedly average on graphics, sound and playability.

Wow! Just fired this up, and I like the theme! This has beautiful graphics and I like it, I certainly missed some stunning gems in the past.

Simply too hard. Had high expectations for it. The difficulty completely ruins it. 5/10

Project X with wasps... Yeah, it was okay. It didn't grab me enough to play more than a dozen times, and I didn't get very far (maybe that's why I didn't like it). 6/10

Holy cow! Even after almost 20 years, this game still remains one of the best shoot em ups ever created. Everyone that has at least a little interest in shooters must play this one. It is awesome!
In fact, it is so awesome that I made a video review that can be watched here: [www]

Very nice, even if the techno stage, while stil colorfull, misses a bit of the wackiness that stages before it have to display.
Only game where I was atacked by Coke instead of having it promoted in the background (looking at you Plexu

I agree with Retrovirus.
but luckily with WinUAE nowadays there are save states. And cracked versions with cheats. A not-so-good gamer like me does need that sometimes. Unfortunately.

Had I made it past the second level, I might have liked this. Almost all arcade and action games on the Amiga were too difficult for me. Half of my early teenager years consisted in trying out a promising-looking game, getting bitchslapped, giving up, and moving on to the next one. It's sad.

Awesome! I agree: Probably the best h-shooter for the Amiga. I love it! Imprescindible to have this game in your Amiga collection, Highly recommended

Was blown away by the gfx and manga style movies in this but when you got right down to the nitty gritty, it was pretty much a standard shooter. Still great fun tho.

Probably the best h-shooter for the Amiga. Good level design (except scene 4) and gfx, great controls and music.

Awesome shootemup that can still be played at full blast till this day...

Extremely good graphics. Music by Chris, but at least Level 1 sounds a bit dull, always the same short melody in a loop. Somehow, good graphics, good music and good code still don't make a good game - at least this one didn't catch me. It's kinda silly and misses atmosphere.

Its a flying bee shoot'em up... Odd! Hehe! But despite been odd, its really good! It has really good gameplay and surprisingly good gfx!

Best horizontal shmup on the Amiga, no question.

Creativity was obviously alive and well in '92--else who wood-a-thought of making a shooter with a bee in mind? This is the good color stuff, the motion is smooth, control is reasonable. You gotta be good on the stick though--it's really easy to get blown up in this game.

A shoot'm'up game with a great story! Excelent playability with a fast play and with an awesome creativity that made us very well feel how it was being a cursed bee in the incredible realm of the natural dimensions of the flora. Very rich in music and graphical atmosphere! Recommend to anyone!

Is it based on insector x? Any way its better!

This game rules.( insector x ) its stunning, music , fast play and nice control, graphics are glowing, i have to say, im an r-typer, first shoot em up scroller was transbot on the master system, but this has to be the best side scrolling shoter on an amiga. Any one know of any prequals or sequals??10/10

Without a doubt the best sidescrolling shoot'em up for the Amiga. Arcade quality gameplay with very nice graphics and once again a great Hülsbeck-soundtrack.

You need really fast reflexes and good and reliable joystick to play this game, but then you will get the frantic mayhem action with excellent graphics, awesome music and original enemies, including end bosses.

Possibly the best shmup on the Amiga. Very slick (smooth 50hz all the way) and very playable. Nice Gradius-style power-up bar. Oh, and great music.
Do-dow do-dow do-dooow... Do-do-do-doooo-doww-doooowww.
Well... It sounds like the level 1 music in my head.

I missed out on this little game in my Amiga days, so I gave it a go today to test my newly bought USB digital joysticks. I must say, Apidya is a very cool shoot 'em up! Graphically a true colourful feast with many different enemy insects to blow up, although other living things make an entrance too. Later on even robotic creatures attack and they are all very detailed and nice to look at. Also the end-of-level-bosses are very cool.
Although I am a big Chris Huelsbeck fan, I thought the soundtrack of Apidya was a little below his usual standard, but no-way bad! The melody will echo in the back of your mind for a long time, but I just thought it wasn't as good as the music in the Turrican series to name but one masterpiece of Chris. Finally gameplay was well above the usual H-scrolling shooter, but I thought the game was a bit to difficult in some instances. The many different levels, each with their own theme will draw you into the game, trying to find out what's next! All in all Apidya is a very good shooter which I can certainly recommend to everyone!
Graphics: 8/10
Sound: 8/10
Playability: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

The soundtrack alone has more quality than most games ever made. I never was a huge fan of shmups, but this one was different and very well executed!

Simply the best horizontal shmup/.. Project x had many design flaws, and it's ironic that team 17 later rereleased this, gradius style at its best..

What an amazing game, definitely the best Amiga shooter I've ever played, with some of the most detailed graphics I've ever seen on the system, not to mention the top-notch Hülsbeck soundtrack. And not only that, it also plays beautifully with well-thought out enemy formations and tons of variety.
While the game contains lots of nods in the general direction of a number of shooter classics such as Gradius and R-Type, it still manages to come across as fresh and interesting and the fact that you play as a bee only contributes a tiny part to this, most of the awesomeness that is Apidya stems from the excellent game and level design.
By the way, bVork, I don't think the bad English in the intro/outro was intentional, keep in mind Apidya was designed by a bunch of German twenty-somethings in a time without spell checkers and easy access to native English speakers that would fix up your scripts, i.e. The Internet.

An absolutely brilliant game that delivered console-style thrills aplenty. It was beautifully presented with a very cool Japanese feel and the game itself (you played a wasp shooting down various other garden pests) was very original and made a real change to the glut of space-based shooters that were available.
The Amiga was never the weapon of choice for 16-bit shoot 'em up fans (the MegaDrive and SNES boasted far better examples) but of those that were available this was probably the best - Project X played marginally better but was hobbled by an insane difficulty level. Highly recommended.
9/10

The console-style options menu and the ability to use a Sega gamepad illustrate how Apidya was supposed to feel just like a top-notch Japanese console game. Same with the anime-style intro and rather nonsensical text (which is obviously supposed to resemble a poor translation). Perhaps this distinct and unique feel is what makes Apidya so good...
Even though I've finished the game, I still fire it up to try to get a better score. Most shooters of the time (and that includes even console greats like Thunderforce 3) weren't designed for score, but Apidya's bonus stages give skilled players a great opportunity to achieve a massive score (and the game can save high scores, unlike cartridge-based console shooters!)

Stupendous soundtrack, some cracking secrets and well judged difficulty level.

Nice looking but kinda twee. And the intro shows yet again that western game developers just couldn't draw anime back then. Anyway the game itself is playable but just kinda dull. I'd stick with Project X, Disposable Hero and Uridium 2 thanks.

Very good shoot-em-up, brought-down a little by it's high difficulty level and the fact that the wildlife-based theme didn't quite work as well as the R-Type stuff.

WOW! This game blew me away when playing it, it has some great GFX, nice colourful enemies & sprites, music is well done of course by the almighty Chris Huelsbeck & gameplay that makes you want to come back for more even when you got killed!
On the Vs Project X side of things, I do think that both games are truly great, Project X had great music and GFX again but was hard, Apidya was more or less the same but still had that edge I think (although I love all Team 17's games)
They are more or less balanced games I think...

Apidya is such a great game to play, nice graphics, sounds and the music is pretty darn good. It's a good think I had to kill these enemies which they are insects but have their own weapons of killing me is bad especially with that big cockroach that fires at me, and that big grasshopper jumps up high over the grass. As I said this is pretty darn game. Awesome!!!

The best horizontal shoot'em up on the Amiga (although project X-SE (first version was bas) and R-Type 2 came close) so beautiful, so varied.

This game is great, and puts to shame Project X.
Whilst some might argue Project X looks better, this game is at least playable. It's not easy, but at least it has a learning curve rather than the solid brick wall that is Project X.
The graphic design is original, since when has it been a requirement for a SEU to take place in space?
The sound and music are pretty good too. This game is a gem.
Probably the best horizontal SEU on any platform, definitiely the best on the Amiga.
